Author Guidelines

Author Guidelines

Authors are invited to submit original scholarly manuscripts to the Journal of Computation Physics and Earth Science (JoCPES). All submitted manuscripts must fall within the journal's aims and scope, demonstrate scientific relevance and methodological soundness, and comply with the ethical and editorial standards of JoCPES.

All manuscripts are initially screened by the Editorial Team. Manuscripts that do not meet the journal's scope, scientific quality, formatting requirements, ethical standards, or minimum submission requirements may be rejected without external peer review. Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial screening will proceed to the peer-review process.

1. Language

Manuscripts should preferably be written in clear and professional English.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that the manuscript is grammatically correct, scientifically understandable, and suitable for an academic readership.

Manuscripts with language quality that substantially interferes with scientific understanding may be returned to the authors for revision before peer review.

The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) or AI-assisted tools for language improvement is permitted in accordance with the JoCPES Generative AI Policy.

2. Article Types

JoCPES primarily accepts the following types of manuscripts:

  • Original Research Articles;

  • Review Articles;

  • Methodological or Computational Research Articles; and

  • Other scholarly article types considered appropriate by the Editorial Board.

Original Research Articles should present original data, methods, analyses, computational approaches, models, experiments, observations, or scientific findings that contribute to the fields covered by JoCPES.

Review Articles should provide meaningful scientific synthesis, critical evaluation, or systematic analysis of the existing literature rather than merely summarize previously published studies.

3. Manuscript Template and File Format

Authors are strongly encouraged to prepare manuscripts using the official JoCPES manuscript template available on the journal website.

Manuscripts should be submitted in an editable word-processing format, preferably:

  • Microsoft Word .docx.

Authors should not submit manuscripts exclusively in PDF format unless specifically requested by the Editorial Office.

The manuscript should follow the formatting, heading, citation, figure, table, and reference style provided in the official JoCPES template.

4. Manuscript Length

As a general guideline:

  • Original Research Articles: approximately 4,000–8,000 words;

  • Review Articles: approximately 5,000–10,000 words.

The word count generally excludes references, tables, figure captions, acknowledgments, and supplementary materials.

Manuscripts exceeding these limits may be considered when scientifically justified. However, all manuscripts should remain concise, focused, and free from unnecessary repetition.

5. Title

The manuscript title should:

  • clearly represent the main topic of the study;

  • be concise and informative;

  • reflect the principal variables, methods, phenomena, or research area where appropriate;

  • avoid unnecessary abbreviations;

  • avoid overly broad statements; and

  • avoid promotional or exaggerated claims.

Titles should preferably not exceed approximately 20 words.

6. Author Names and Affiliations

The manuscript must provide the full name of each author.

Each author must be linked to an institutional affiliation that includes, where applicable:

  • Department, Study Program, Research Center, or Unit;

  • Institution or University;

  • City; and

  • Country.

Author names and affiliations entered into the OJS submission metadata must be consistent with those written in the manuscript.

The order of authors entered in OJS must also match the author order shown in the submitted manuscript.

7. Corresponding Author

One author must be designated as the corresponding author.

The corresponding author is responsible for communication with the JoCPES Editorial Office throughout the submission, peer-review, revision, publication, and post-publication processes.

The corresponding author must provide a valid and active email address.

The corresponding author is also responsible for ensuring that:

  • all listed authors have approved the manuscript;

  • the author order has been agreed upon;

  • all listed authors have made appropriate scholarly contributions;

  • all authors approve revisions submitted to the journal; and

  • all authors approve the final version accepted for publication.

8. Abstract

Each manuscript must include a clear and self-contained abstract of approximately 150–250 words.

For Original Research Articles, the abstract should briefly describe:

  • the research background or problem;

  • the objective of the study;

  • the methods or data used;

  • the principal findings; and

  • the main conclusion or scientific implication.

The abstract should not contain unnecessary citations, undefined abbreviations, tables, figures, or equations unless essential.

Authors should avoid statements that are not supported by the results presented in the manuscript.

9. Keywords

Authors must provide 3–6 keywords representing the main topics, methods, variables, or scientific domains of the manuscript.

Keywords should:

  • be specific and searchable;

  • complement rather than simply repeat the title;

  • use established terminology in the relevant scientific field; and

  • avoid overly general terms.

10. Recommended Manuscript Structure

Original Research Articles should normally follow the general structure below:

  1. Introduction

  2. Materials and Methods or Methodology

  3. Results

  4. Discussion

  5. Conclusion

  6. Acknowledgments, if applicable

  7. Funding Statement

  8. Author Contributions

  10. Data Availability Statement

  11. Generative AI Use Statement, if applicable

  12. Ethics Approval Statement, if applicable

  13. References

Results and Discussion may be combined where scientifically appropriate.

Alternative structures may be accepted for Review Articles, methodological papers, theoretical studies, or other manuscript types where a conventional research structure is not appropriate.

11. Introduction

The Introduction should provide sufficient scientific context for the study.

Authors should clearly describe:

  • the background of the research problem;

  • relevant previous studies;

  • limitations or gaps in existing knowledge;

  • the scientific motivation of the study;

  • the novelty or contribution of the work; and

  • optimization procedures;

  • evaluation metrics;

  • baseline or comparison methods;

  • uncertainty or variability where appropriate;

  • software framework and version;

  • computing environment; and

  • repeated experimental procedures or random seeds where relevant.

Claims of superior model performance should normally be supported by appropriate comparisons rather than by reporting a single model result in isolation.

14. Results

The Results section should present the study findings clearly, objectively, and logically.

Authors should:

  • report results relevant to the stated research objectives;

  • avoid repeating identical information in text, tables, and figures;

  • report appropriate quantitative measures;

  • provide uncertainty, statistical testing, or variability where relevant;

  • clearly distinguish findings from interpretation; and

  • avoid overstating the significance of the results.

All tables and figures discussed in the manuscript must be cited in numerical order.

15. Discussion

The Discussion should interpret the findings in relation to the research objectives and relevant scientific literature.

Authors should address, where appropriate:

  • interpretation of the principal findings;

  • comparison with previous studies;

  • possible explanations for similarities or differences;

  • scientific or practical implications;

  • strengths of the study;

Authors must disclose any financial, professional, institutional, or personal relationships that could reasonably be perceived as influencing the research.

If no conflict exists, authors should state:

Conflict of Interest: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

If a potential conflict exists, it must be described transparently.

The existence of a conflict of interest does not automatically prevent publication. However, failure to disclose a relevant conflict may constitute a publication-ethics concern.

21. Data Availability Statement

All manuscripts should include a Data Availability Statement describing whether and how the data supporting the findings may be accessed.

Examples include:

Publicly Available Data

The data used in this study are publicly available from [repository/database] at [URL or persistent identifier].

  • manuscript preparation;

  • data analysis;

  • programming or code generation;

  • research methodology;

  • figure or image generation; or

  • other significant aspects of the research.

Example:

Generative AI Use Statement: The authors used [name of tool] to assist with English-language editing. All AI-assisted outputs were reviewed, verified, and revised by the authors, who take full responsibility for the final content.

Routine spelling correction, conventional grammar checking, or reference-management software generally does not require disclosure unless it generates substantive content.

Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.

23. Ethics Approval

Research involving human participants, personal data, animals, or other activities requiring ethical oversight must comply with applicable institutional, national, and international ethical standards.

Where applicable, authors should provide:

  • the name of the approving ethics committee or institutional review board;

  • approval number or reference number; and

  • confirmation of informed consent where required.

Example:

Ethics Approval: This study was approved by the [Name of Ethics Committee], Approval No. [XXXX].

For studies that do not require ethical approval, authors may state:

Ethics Approval: Not applicable.

Authors are responsible for determining whether ethical approval is required for their research.

24. References

References must be relevant, accurate, traceable, and appropriate to the subject of the manuscript.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that:

  • all references cited in the text appear in the reference list;

  • all references listed are cited in the manuscript;

  • bibliographic information is accurate;

  • Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are included where available;

  • references are drawn primarily from credible scholarly sources;

  • relevant recent literature is considered; and

  • fabricated, unverifiable, or AI-generated references are not included.

Authors are encouraged to prioritize original research articles and other primary scholarly sources.

Older references may be used when they represent important foundational or seminal work.

25. Citation Style

Authors must follow the citation and reference style specified in the official JoCPES manuscript template.

Citation formatting must be consistent throughout the manuscript.

Reference-management software such as Mendeley, Zotero, EndNote, or similar tools is recommended to improve citation consistency and reduce bibliographic errors.

Authors remain responsible for verifying the accuracy of automatically generated references.

26. Figures

Figures must be scientifically relevant, clear, readable, and of sufficient quality for publication.

Authors should ensure that:

  • figures are numbered consecutively;

  • each figure is cited in the manuscript;

  • each figure has a clear and informative caption;

  • text, labels, legends, and symbols remain readable;

  • axes include appropriate labels and units;

  • image manipulation does not alter the scientific meaning of the data; and

  • figures reproduced or adapted from other sources include appropriate permission and attribution where required.

Authors should preferably submit figures at a resolution appropriate for publication.

As a general guideline:

  • line drawings: approximately 600 dpi;

  • photographs and continuous-tone images: approximately 300 dpi.

Preferred formats include PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or other high-quality formats supported by the journal workflow.

27. Tables

Tables should present information clearly and efficiently.

Authors should ensure that:

  • tables are numbered consecutively;

  • every table is cited in the manuscript;

  • each table has a concise and descriptive title;

  • abbreviations are explained when necessary;

  • measurement units are clearly stated; and

  • the same data are not unnecessarily duplicated in both tables and figures.

Tables should preferably be created as editable tables rather than inserted as images.

28. Equations

Mathematical equations should be presented clearly and consistently.

Authors should:

  • use an appropriate equation editor;

  • define mathematical symbols when first introduced;

  • use consistent notation throughout the manuscript;

  • number equations consecutively when they are referenced in the text; and

  • avoid presenting equations as low-resolution images.

Example:

(1)

Equations should be cited in the manuscript as Equation (1) or Eq. (1), according to the journal template.

29. Units and Scientific Notation

JoCPES strongly recommends the use of the International System of Units (SI).

Authors should:

  • use standardized scientific units;

  • maintain consistent unit formatting;

  • clearly define non-standard units;

  • use accepted scientific symbols and abbreviations; and

  • place appropriate spacing between numerical values and units.

Examples:

25 °C

10 m s⁻¹

50 mm

2.5 km

Where discipline-specific non-SI units are commonly used, authors should provide appropriate explanation or conversion when necessary.

30. Supplementary Materials

Authors may submit supplementary materials that provide additional information supporting the manuscript but are not essential to understanding the principal findings.

Supplementary materials may include:

  • additional tables;

  • additional figures;

  • datasets;

  • code;

  • videos;

  • extended methodological information;

  • questionnaires;

  • appendices; or

  • other supporting files.

Supplementary files must be clearly labeled and referenced in the main manuscript.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that supplementary materials do not contain confidential, copyrighted, or personally identifiable information without appropriate authorization.

31. Originality and Prior Publication

Manuscripts submitted to JoCPES must represent original work and must not have been previously published in substantially the same form.

A manuscript must not be simultaneously submitted to another journal while under consideration by JoCPES.

Authors must disclose any closely related manuscript, preprint, conference paper, thesis, dataset, or previous publication where necessary to allow the Editorial Team to assess potential overlap.

Duplicate publication, plagiarism, self-plagiarism involving substantial undisclosed duplication, fabricated data, falsification, or other forms of research misconduct are prohibited.

32. Similarity and Plagiarism Screening

Submitted manuscripts may be screened using plagiarism-detection or similarity-checking software.

A similarity percentage alone does not automatically determine whether plagiarism has occurred.

The Editorial Team will consider factors such as:

  • source of the similarity;

  • amount of copied text;

  • appropriate citation;

  • reuse of standard methodological language;

  • duplication from the authors' own previous work; and

  • overall context.

JoCPES reserves the right to reject manuscripts containing inappropriate textual duplication or other forms of plagiarism.

33. Copyrighted Material and Permissions

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material such as:

  • figures;

  • photographs;

  • maps;

  • tables;

  • questionnaires; or

  • substantial portions of previously published content.

Appropriate attribution must be provided.

Submission of a manuscript to JoCPES indicates that the authors have obtained any necessary permissions for material included in the submission.

34. Revision of Manuscripts

When a manuscript is returned for revision, authors should carefully address all comments from reviewers and editors.

Revised submissions should normally include:

  1. a revised manuscript; and

  2. a detailed response to reviewers.

The response should explain how each reviewer comment was addressed.

Where an author disagrees with a reviewer recommendation, the author should provide a clear and scientifically justified response.

Authors should not ignore reviewer comments without explanation.

35. Proofreading and Final Publication

After acceptance and editorial processing, the corresponding author may receive a proof version of the manuscript.

Authors must carefully review the proof for:

  • typographical errors;

  • author names;

  • affiliations;

  • tables;

  • figures;

  • equations;

  • references; and

  • other production-related issues.

Proofreading should generally be limited to correcting production errors and should not be used to make substantial changes to the scientific content of an accepted article unless approved by the Editor.

36. Article Processing Charge

JoCPES does not charge any manuscript submission fee or peer-review fee.

For manuscripts that successfully complete the peer-review and editorial process and are officially accepted for publication, authors are required to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) of IDR 99,000 per accepted article.

The APC supports journal management, editorial processing, article layout, DOI registration and maintenance, digital archiving, and open-access publication.

Payment of the APC does not influence editorial decisions, peer-review outcomes, or manuscript acceptance.
